    I was 18 when GNR hit. I feel sorry for rock fans who dont get to live through a debut like that. GAME CHANGER . To say it was my soundtrack <and my pals>is an understatement. Living in Detroit , the rock scene exploded and <if it's your thing> the girls had never been hotter,the whiskey and beers better , or going out on Friday and Saturday. Imagine the club scenes from Purple Rain but with metal and rock. Can I go back ?

    I would have to say, not in any particular order: Van Halen Boston Led Zeppelin Cars These all changed the sound of what I was hearing at the time.

    Very solid list, but I would need to put Ritchie Valen's debut album in the top 5 over Van Halen. That is one of the most influential albums of all time. Some others I'd consider for top 10: Joy Division Unknown Pleasures My Bloody Valentine Isn't Anything Nine Inch Nails Pretty Hate Machine ...And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of Dead S/T The Velvet Underground S/T

    I totally agree with Zeppelin & Sabbath. I had not owned that Hendrix album until recently and he has never been on a top list for me, but I have to agree. I’m going in a different direction with the next two, I’m going with REM’s Murmur and the White Stripes S/T. I also have to throw Toadies Rubberneck in the mix. I own Appetite and it’s a great album.

    I don't know if I can choose 5 so for me I'll say Zeppelin I (not my favorite from them, I like Physical Graffiti).They changed music with that album, just like Elvis and the Beatles did before them. I was born in 76' and like you I do remember when G&R came out. EVERYONE in school was talking about Paradise City. And while I'm not really into grunge anymore, Nevermind was mind blowing when it came out. Top five is tough as most bands I listen to, their first album is not my favorite!

    The way I see it is, if you're going to sell albums to people who are just in it for collecting, and have no intention of ever breaking the thing open, why not just put in a blank plastic disc. No music needed. Do you know how much money you can save, and also make? Think about it.

    One of the main reason I built a CD collection rather than a vinyl collection is that the fidelity on vinyl degrade after so many listens. If I had lots of disposable income, I'd collect vinyls from selected bands but never open or play them.

      Not sure about that. If you treat a record properly it can sound great forever. I have 50-60 year old LPs that play perfectly. But if CDs are what you enjoy that’s cool as well.

    Justification for keeping something sealed is ridiculous. Just say it, you’re speculating on hoping to make a bit more money. And btw the other nostalgia industries like “trading cards” and “comics” have crashed and burned. That’s why clowns like Aoki are “slabbing” records. It’s a fad scam.

    • @NTXVinyl
      @NTXVinyl 5 днів тому

      From your POV, sure. But not everyone sees it that way. Plenty of people like the idea of preserving history. But I do agree on slabbing, and think it’s a terrible trend for any hobby

  • @patrickboegel
    @patrickboegel 5 днів тому

    The reason people who don’t open records is purely to flip them. It’s total garbage. Buying to speculate is a farce, they are not supporting the artist it’s all “investment”.

    • @NTXVinyl
      @NTXVinyl 5 днів тому

      I agree that scenario exists. But that’s not always the case, I assure you. In fact, I just bought a large collection last week of about 600 records, and there are bunches of sealed LPs included. They never had any intention of flipping them, they simply never had time to listen to them because they bought so many so fast. And then they ended up getting burnt out on the hobby and needed cash. So it was quite the opposite…they lost money on every single one of them

    Lately I’ve been buying records at every concert I go to with my friends or kids and leave them sealed. I place them in an outer sleeve and leave a note of the concert date and who I was with. Since all concert tickets are digital now, these records are just for memories. Other than that I open and play all my other records.

    When I lived in a large city I always supported local small business owners (my local comic book shop, etc.). I now live in northern Michigan and the closest record store to me is over two hours away. I visited them yesterday and spent $180 on six records and some cleaner. For me, I can't drive there two or three times a week to support them (more like once every few months), so I have no other option than the big box stores, like Walmart (I'm also purchasing on Discogs now). With that said, I refuse to support Amazon on many things now. I had Amazon for years, but after continuous price hikes and terrible packaging ( I would NEVER order something fragile like a record from Amazon) I refuse to support a company that makes billions and still raises their prices on a near annual basis. With all that said, I think small business owners absolutely need to connect with their customers by taking an interest in them and providing the best customer service experience as possible. If I get that, I'll willingly spend more money at a small business vs Walmart/Amazon. Conversely, if a small business doesn't take an interest in me, I'm not coming back. Just my two cents!

    Hey GI, I love your channel and I live in Gold Coast Australia. It’s funny before I started collecting Records, I used to collect fine wine (still do to some degree). What I found really frustrating about collecting wine was after spending lots of time and money buying the wine, you either just let it sit there in your wine fridge or you drank it and then it was gone, What I love about collecting Records is that after you find them you can play them over and over again. I am definitely in the camp of playing the Records and it’s one of the things I love about the hobby. Love you work mate cheers.

    Great video. There are two things I have: 1) Regarding reissues; as a newer collector, its helping me out, but I really need some labels or bands (not sure who's at fault) to start doing more reissues. For me its Rush. I desperately want a copy of Counterparts and Test for Echo but neither have had a reissue in many years and I'm not dropping $400 on a record. 2) Paper sleeves in 2024 is criminal. For example, I've purchased some Taylor Swift records for my wife. Everything about her releases screams high quality,: the artwork, lyrics, amount of songs, etc. But she uses paper sleeves. The records are scuffed and have paper residue on them right out of packaging. It drives me nuts! Who do we complain to? The label? The artist? For the higher cost they are charging for new records, a poly inner should be a given.

    • @NTXVinyl
      @NTXVinyl 4 дні тому

      (1) In most cases it’s just a waiting game. But in others it can be a lost cost depending on contractual issues. With a hugely popular band like Rush you gotta think their entire catalog will become readily available…..eventually (2) AMEN TO THAT. It is 100% the record label making to minute decisions on pressings, like the style of inner sleeve. Completely defeating as you said.

    always a great topic for discussion. One of the biggest differences in the records you showed sealed vs what people buy today is that it's unusual for those records to exist. today, half the people buying records dont even own a player. imagine how many sealed taylor swift records exist (and will never be opened) vs a 1970s zeppelin reissue. as for slabbing them and rating them - that is a horrible development coming out of the video game market. it will only entice more people who dont play records to get involved in vinyl, purely to scalp and profit.

    I play my records , although I have bought a dozen+ for nostalgia reasons. Most of them which have got lost thru the years. The oldest sealed record I bought was Jimmy Castor - Hey Leroy , from 1967. #2 is Kool & the gang - Kool jazz from 1973. On both occations , after I payed , I broke the seal to inspect the record in front of the wide eyed store owners. That is tremendously fun. Hey , I’m gonna play them as soon as I come home anyway. Might as well have a laugh while I can. Yolo!
